Hello all. Today we met with my Dad in Brussels, which was fantastic. He is over in Germany for business this next week so he was able to drive over to Brussels fairly easily. It was great to be able to see him and to see Bruges and Brussels with him. What made it great was that he knows a lot of the history and fun facts, and he knows the languages, and best of all he had a car... So we did not have to bike anywhere. We began the day by going to a local cafe and having breakfast which consisted of a yummy omelette and some coffee.
After breakfast we loaded into the car and drove to Bruges... What a novel invention the car. We wanted to go to a place about 60 miles away and we got there in about an hour... Not in about a day. We also arrived cool and refreshed not sweaty and exhausted. We walked all over Bruges visiting a bunch of little monuments and buildings and such. It was really neat to see Bruges, but I was surprised how crowded it was. I know it is a popular place to visit and it was a weekend, but it was still very crowded in the little city. While walking around Bruges we ate a handful of Belgian waffles though, so that made everything alright. For lunch we went to the Half Moon brewery in Bruges. The food was good, but the beers were just alright. It is a pity, I was really hoping for some good brews in a small craft brewery in Northern Belgium.
After eating Lunch, we made our way back to the car and then started making our way back Brussels. We ended up driving past Brussels so we could check out Waterloo and see the monuments and the field where Napoleon was finally stopped. After a quick jaunt around the monument we went into Brussels and made our way to the Grand Place (or Plaza... The big fancy square). We had a nice time wandering around the streets there and seeing the buildings and eating a Belgian waffle. We did make it to the Manneken Piss for the obligatory picture. Luckily it was not too corwded when we got there but a few minutes later the flood gates of tourists did show up.
After seeing the Manneken Piss we made our way back to the Grand Place and had some dinner at a restaurant on the square. It was alright, but definitely touristy. After dinner the day was done, and we made our way to the car, got dropped off at the apartment, and then parted our ways. It was really nice to see my Dad and I had a great time spending the day with him. It was a nice break in the middle of the vacation. Tomorrow we are riding to Lille in France, so we will be making our second to final border crossing. It is going to be a 70 mile day so I am going to leave you all now. So I say best wishes and until next time.
