Riding Day 16- Running on empty

Hello all!  We made it to Luxembourg City in Luxembourg finally, which means one glorious things... Tomorrow I don't have to get on my bike.  I don't even have to see my bike if I don't want to.  We finally have a rest day.  The ride from Saarbrucken to Luxembourg was suppose to be an easy 61 miles but through some wrong turns and through some desperate searches for food it ended up around 73 miles.  All in all though the riding was not too bad and we made it to Luxembourg right around 7:00pm so only about an hour later than we were hoping to be there.

The day began with a nice spread of breads and jams with our hosts and then after packing up and heading out of Saarbrucken along the Saar river.  About 12 miles down we stopped in a little town to go to a bike shop because our bikes were in desperate need of some oil.  They were very loud and sounding used and abused.  We found a bike shop bought the oil and since there happened to be a cafe/bakery we sat down to some pastries and coffee.  When we were leaving the bakery, I thought about buying some sandwiches for lunch then, but then decided that we are bound to come across somewhere that has lunch food in the next couple hours (spoiler alert: we didn't).

We continued biking up the river a ways before leaving the Saar and beginning the hill climbing portion of our journey.  The hills were not to bad, so we were feeling good but getting hungry as it was now a little after noon.  Every little town we went through had a restaurant or something similar in it, and every restaurant was either not open for lunch or it was their day off, or they were just on holiday.  At once point we climbed all over a town looking for food, and when we were standing outside in the street trying to decide what to do, and we must have looked exhausted and desperate, because this woman came over and offered us a cold bottle of water and a cold bottle of orange soda.  We took her up on the offer and the cold drinks were amazing, unfortunately she did not have food for us, but she was very nice to give us drinks.  We kept pushing on climbing hills and riding towards thunderstorms (which somehow we managed to avoid and we never really got rained on) stopping in every town that might have food.  Luckily there were some nice views during the riding to distract us the intense hunger we had.

Eventually, we made it to the Germany-Luxembourg border and the towns of Perl and Schengen, where there was food.  This was perfect timing because at this point we were really running on empty.  We stopped at a little rotisserie chicken wagon cart thing and ate a half a chicken each, some French fries, and some potato salad.  It was amazing!

After getting refueled, we started biking on to Luxembourg city again.  We had to stop at one point to hide from a brief storm but otherwise it was just a lot of hill climbing to get the last 20 miles into Luxembourg.  We are staying in a nice apartment in the new part of town, but only a quarter mile walk or so from the old historical part, which tomorrow we will go see.  For dinner we went to an Indian restaurant that our hosts recommended.  It was pretty good with massive amounts of food (I ate way too much).  The momo that they made though were some of best I have had, otherwise compared to Sherpa House in Golden, Sherpa wins.

I think that is all I have for now.  I am exhausted and going to head to bed now, and the best part is... I do not have an alarm set for the morning.  So best wishes and until next time.
